Village school in Doano/Southern Ethiopia receives decent toilet and suitable school desks
The Peter Bachmann Foundation has been actively involved in improving education, livelihoods and sanitation in several regions of Ethiopia. One of the PBF’s locations was Durame and the neighboring areas. The PBF is helping to build the Abune Francis School and Doano Elementary School and is supporting beekeeping and water projects in the region.
Abel and Yossy, dedicated brothers, have worked together for a decade to expand and maintain these projects. The impact of these projects goes beyond mere infrastructure, as they help to improve the overall quality of education and sanitation in the region, ultimately improving the livelihoods of the local community. These dedicated brothers built the elementary school in their own village, Doano, to now provide educational opportunities for local children with the support of their community and PBF. The two siblings have since completed their university education with a doctorate.
The Doano school is very remote and lacks transportation, electricity and water. As a result, it is neglected by the government and there is a lack of interest due to these limitations. Despite these challenges, Abel and Yossy have worked tirelessly to equip the school with modest resources, such as furniture, stationery, renovating the existing infrastructure and organizing initiatives that come from the village community.

In the meantime, the classrooms have become dilapidated and are in need of maintenance. The following pictures show the gradual deterioration of the school and the toilet.
After a visit by Dan and Getachew in February 2023, the foundation decided to invest in smaller but extremely necessary projects: Toilets and furniture are to be renewed. These projects are intended to improve the overall learning environment for the pupils.
The community is very grateful for the support that PBF has provided in recent years.
In order to change the educational opportunities for their children, the remote village of Doano urgently needs further support.
