December 2023: Uganda / Mpigi: kernel of the avocado fruit brings benefits and healing

The kernel of the avocado fruit brings benefits and healing

Herbert completed his studies in 2016 in Kampala, Uganda, at Makere University: information technology with various specializations such as networking, software engineering, management of information systems, business administration and much more. These were remarkable prerequisites for a bright future. Herbert’s professional career and his various connections in society enabled new innovative ideas, visions that opened up ways for him to realize a task that was meant for him.

The economic situation in Uganda in 2019, the Covid crisis, job cuts and much more did not leave Herbert unscathed. He lost his job. After returning to his hometown, Mpigi, a small town in Mawokota County, he faced many new difficult challenges. The death of his mother due to high blood pressure, caring for his elderly father, precarious housing conditions and other things did not lead Herbert to resignation, but to courageous action: He started a small project, calling it the Experimental Research Project (ERP). It centered on the idea that the pit of the avocado fruit could be used to make a healing tea. Together with children, Herbert began collecting avocado pits wherever possible, drying them, roasting them, exploring them and finally creating his own tea from them. The improvement in health was widely praised by his people, which encouraged Herbert to expand the small business. He gave the tea away for free in his neighborhood, observed the healing effects of avocado pits and wrote an online report about it.  Peter Bachmann found out about it via social media and asked Herbert for more information. Dan Amolo traveled across the border from Kenya to Uganda in 2021 to get to know Herbert and his innovative project in Mpigi. From humble beginnings in an emergency situation, a good collaboration with PBF developed over the following months. What was originally effective against high blood pressure now showed even more comprehensive healing effects.   The avocado kernels were now systematically collected and processed into tea.

The kernels are very susceptible to pests, which affect the harvests. The enterprise initiated by a single person has increasingly become a community project, as the farmers are interested in the comprehensive utilization of their avocados. Local women and young people are helping to stabilize the project, e.g. by growing, collecting and processing avocados. After rigorous scientific testing, the state health authorities agreed to bring the tea onto the market. Well-known topics such as climate protection, equal opportunities, community spirit, human dignity, health, tree planting, market creation and many more are increasingly being given a concrete profile and are becoming mandatory tasks. Dealing with authorities, social interests and different agendas has made Herbert a valuable link to PBF thanks to his persistent, confident and competent attitude. The affordable health products from the avocado pit enable vulnerable people in particular to enjoy a better quality of life.  Herbert’s forced return to Mpigi, this small town, led him to an effective result thanks to the use of all his physical and mental strength, his intelligence and care for the well-being of his surroundings.  PBF wishes the company HiH (HerbertsIncubationHub) successful services in the very insecure society of Uganda, which is characterized by great need.
