Ethiopia / Gashena: Ground water project

Pure water is the world’s first and foremost medicine!!!
(Slovakian Proverb)

1. BACKGROUND
Water, unquestionably the source of all life, is one of the key strategic issues of our time. Moreover, it is a naturally endowed common, economic, political and social good. Despite the best efforts of the international development community to improve water resources and access to sanitation facilities worldwide, as of 2002, some 2.6 billion people – half of the developing world – live without improved sanitation. Lack of clean water remains a serious problem – 1.1 billion people are still using water from unimproved sources in sub-Saharan Africa and 42 percent of the population is still not served at all. Ethiopia / Lalibela: Emmanuel Architects & Engineering Consultation Service

Emmanuel Architects & Engineering Consultation Service
Project: Lalibela- Ethiopiaesidential Housing for the poor Residents of Lalibela, Ethiopia.

Owned by one of the former students of PBF – Sileshi Dargie – who graduated with BSC degree in Civil Engineering, this project is also a very promising business which PBF has funded for its creation. It is the reflection of PBF’s goal of creating sustainable and self-employment based entrepreneurship opportunity for young and intelligent professionals most of whom are wasted staying idle searching for government jobs.

The project started functioning recently in 2014 aiming to provide multi-disciplinary consulting services to the public as well as private firms engaged in the development of various types of economic and social infrastructures and buildings. The business being operating in Lalibela, it has already started alleviating some general and specific problems of the society and individual beneficiaries of the project.
To begin with specific benefits, the project is generating income for the owner and his poorest families who used to be dependent of PBF support. It has also created job opportunities for 9 people including the owner who has got a chance to implement his knowledge in to the practical professional engineering career. From the societal perspective, providing such a service in the town has minimized the tedious traveling and extra-cost implications to get similar service from companies working in other big cities far from Lalibela.

This small scale business enterprise is aspiring for ambitious success in the nearest future with a vision of “being a competitive Engineering and Architectural consultancy firm known for professional and business integrity!” and setting its mission to Provide high quality and cost effective design, supervision and construction contract administration services on time to the clients.”

Currently, the office is providing professional services including but not limited to: conducting feasibility and engineering implications of proposed constructions, practical engineering services including design, supervision and contract administration of buildings, roads and other related works. It also provides services in other types of civil engineering works including surveying, structural, environmental and geo-technical engineering.

With all such promising start in mind, however, the office is functioning with the minimum license which in the near future may hinder its missions and visions to come true. Because, this minimum license – unless upgraded in to the medium or higher standard – restrict the maximum financial and activity based participation of the firm. To make sure that this limitation will not affect the future success of the business, it is essential to fulfill additional material and financial as well as human resource requirements to get the medium license certificate with which it would be legally possible to work on all business offers from our clients.

Ethiopia / Lalibela: Residential Housing for the poor Residents of Lalibela

Ethiopia / Lalibela: Residential Housing for the poor Residents of Lalibela

Following the devastating famine in Ethiopia in 1985, the Government of Ethiopia, a host of Non Government Organization and the citizens embarked on rebuilding the country and her population
Peter Bachmann Foundation, PBF, later joined hands with the efforts to help citizens recover not just in the areas of food, health education and shelter but also with but also their self-worth; PBF sponsored children education needs support to health centers and support for small businesses, Agriculture in this effort with wonderful results. PBF helped build Peter Village in Lalibela which was highly appreciated.
Although Ethiopia has continued to register great double-digit DGP growth in the past 20 years or so, this growth actually has widened the gap between the rich and the poor more so in the countryside and the small cities.
The Housing Project is to provide shelter to the poorest of the poor mostly very elderly widows living in the slums of the great and Historical city of Lalibela.
These are people evicted from a slum village that live in ‘World Vision’ village; this village is formerly site for World Vision camp during the work and food distribution during the famine of 1985.
These poor people occupied the sheds and warehouses and for the past 30 years, paid some little fees to the Government. They suffer during rains and respiratory sicknesses as the sheds are made of iron sheets both walls and roofing and are very cols during the rainy seasons and very hot in the sunny days.
The Government is evicting them to give way for a road construction without compensation but has allocated them plots of land of 120 square meters and no money or construction.
PBF responded to this need and lead by team leader, Mesay Mekuanent, 29 families being the poorest of the poor were selected as beneficiary. Read more

Sri Lanka: Inter-cultural English Education Centre

I am very happy to have the opportunity to express, however briefly it be, my sincere thanks to the Peter Bachmann Foundation for the great contribution it has made in establishing our Inter-cultural English Education Centre. If not for the financial assistance given by the PBF our institute would not have been able to render to society the service it renders today. Read more

Ethiopia / Gashena: Minibus project for the Gashena Medium Clinic

Ethiopia / Gashena: Minibus project for the Gashena Medium Clinic

This project lean-to the highly rated health service project which PBF is providing in the town called Gashena to the surrounding poorest people in the area. Because of the very hilly topography and the lack of safe transportation system as well as the incapability of the people to afford the cost of the available transport services, quite numbers of patients were dying on their way to the clinic. Most of the times, in view of resolving lack of transport facility, people usually have to carry the patient or they have to use a traditional bed -wheelchair made up of wood. Others have to take animal transportation system by using Donkeys or Horses to bring the patient. These options even worsen the health condition and pain of the patient before she/he reaches to the clinic and get the appropriate medical treatment as it causes irresistible physical and psychological discomfort and weakness to the patients which further complicate medical treatments. Disappointingly, the most vulnerable patients are Pregnant women who wish to deliver a child in the clinic, old and long aged persons who are suffering with senility and persons who are victims of crimes of rape, physical assault and bodily injury and people who experience accidents that demand urgent treatments.
Understanding these challenges, PBF has endorsed a project which appeals for the purchase of a Minibus car that can minimise the transportation problem. PBF believes that the minibus will make ease of access to the clinic so that people will get medication before their cases reach to the stage far from being treatable. The fact the road construction from Gashena to Lalibela will also accelerate the function of the minibus in a more comfortable and minimise the accident-prone transportation system in the area.
