Educational help

Educational help

A ray of hope in the distance.
Education is an important step in the fight against poverty, especially for the men of the low caste. The Peter Bachmann Foundation supports and encourages the population to realise that through education it is possible to develop new perspectives and achieve a new self-confidence. In 1997 a young computer student, Sarfan, asked the foundation to help finance his studies. After his succesful graduation he once again contacted the foundation, this time for assistance in starting a computer school at Kekirawa a rather isolated town close to Anuradhapura. In 2002 Sarfan and Peter Bachmann were able to present 62 first diplomas to the successful graduates. The computer school is an excellent example of how self-sufficiency can work. Read more

Agriculture

construction

No matter whether they are about biogas, the use of solar energy to dry food, dairy farming or the different methods of irrigation all our projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sri Lanka have something in common: They are all built on the three cornerstones of network, coordination and education and training which, ideally, should help the target group to achieve and sustain a better income and quality of life.
As an example we can look at Boccadep in Kenya. Ovegrazing and unbalanced cultivation has resulted in an inferior quality of soil. The crop produced from these fields is insufficient and this invariably leads to poverty which in turn results in extreme social difficulties and crime. The ones to suffer the most from these circumstances are the women and, of course, the weakest in the human chain: The children.
When we succeed in breaking this vicious circle then we can turn this chain of events in a positive direction. Not only is there enough food but workplaces and social networks are created.
It is our aim to break this vicious circle with the help of agricultural projects specifically geared to help the population of that region. For example, in the olive grove project in Lalibela not only are young trees grown and protected but the project also includes finding out which young trees are the most suitable for that particular area. We also wish to show and teach the people how to use their own resources independently. This includes good functioning irrigation systems, appropriate use of sources of energy, a correct care for livestock and social structures which provide a pleasant working environment where each and everyone can profit from the experience and knowledge of the others. Accomodation and infrastructure

hausbau

A base for body, soul and community.
Housing is the centrepiece of the Bachmann Foundation. It was with the task of building of new housing that the Foundation started in 1994. It’s a simple principle: A member of the potter caste can only afford a hut made of clay. During the rainy season, which happens twice a year, these clay huts suffer badly. They are damaged by the intense rainfall and become extremely damp inside. The humidity increases the risk of infection for the occupants. The houses offer virtually no shelter against dangerous insects or snakes, and the continual and necessary improvement work robs the occupant of a good deal of time, money (of which he had very little to start with anyway) and optimism! However, not only does a brick house provide the occupant with security and protection, it also lifts his self-esteem and self-confidence. This can clearly be seen during the celebrations to inaugurate the new housing. Now at last he can relax a little and turn his attention to other important things, for example helping his neighbour in building his house, or the orphanage; maybe helping to train someone else, or helping with the education of the children.
