Framing the Future: From One Camera to a Dream Realised
For Zerfu Arega, photography wasn’t just a career for him; it was rather an endurance test. He spent his early years learning the trade from the ground up, working as an employee at a local photo studio where he polished his technical eye and learned what it takes to capture a moment.
He started out working long hours as an employee, quietly learning the heartbeat of the business. When he finally gathered the courage to step out on his own, the reality was heartbreakingly thin. With just one camera to his name and no shop of his own, he lived on the edge of a phone call. He waited anxiously for word-of-mouth event gigs, never knowing when the next pay-check would arrive.
As a husband and a father, the weight of that uncertainty was heavy enough to crush a spirit. The financial burdens were relentless; worrying about rent, scraping together money for his children’s needs, and watching his family’s security hang by the thread of a temporary gig. He had the talent, but he lacked the anchor.
Then the PBF stepped in, and everything shifted. PBF didn’t just give him financial help; we gave him a home for his dreams. We transformed his lonely hustle into a permanent, beautifully equipped photo studio, complete with professional gear, computers, printers, and studio backdrops. The first time he stepped inside, it felt surreal—a professional space built just for him.
Today, that studio is a warm, bustling hub in the town of Lalibela. It is no longer just a place for event photography. Walk in today, and you will find him and his team handling everything from family portraits and grand celebrations to quick document printing, photocopying, and detailed photo editing.
The growth has rippled outward in the most wonderful ways. He has recently hired two additional local workers to help manage the steady flow of customers, transforming him from a stressed solo freelancer into an employer and a mentor.
At home, the difference is profound. The constant knot of anxiety in his stomach has loosened, replaced by the quiet pride of walking through his front door knowing he can provide for his wife and kids. His children get to see their father wake up every morning to run a respected, thriving business. It is more than a success story of lenses and printers; it is the story of a hardworking family finally given room to breathe, grow, and truly live.
