PBF Children Feeding Program in Mathare, Nairobi

For the past 10 years, PBF has been supporting a feeding program in an informal school in Mathare Skums Nairobi. We started with the Page Vision where children from the informal settlement who have no place in the local public schools converge every morning for basic classes provided by volunteer teachers from the neighborhood.

Most of these children come from single parent families and their mothers walk to other estates to work as house helps. They are paid approximately $ 2 to $ 3 dollars which they use to buy at least one meal for their families. The children normally go to the informal school without any meal. At the school, PBF provides monthly budget used to buy floor and milk to prepare porridge (uji) which serves both as breakfast and lunch. Hundreds of children depend on this on meal and this is their only motivation to attend classes.

Two years ago, Dear  Peter visited Mathare and saw the sorry state of affairs faced by the children. He offered that PBF would include another informal school which cares for children living with various disabilities. St. Maurus Children center receives $ 1500 every month fo support the feeding and various other activities including the their boarding facility in Kantafu where these children stay to learn practical survival lessons before they are release back to their families.

Eunice, our PBF representative volunteers to take the  Mathare Children to the Kantafu Center where they have space to play, work in the  garden and play freely because the space in Mathare in just a single room given by the local church.

On behalf of Friends of St. Maurus School, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Peter Bachmann Foundation (PBF) for your continued support of the feeding program for our children with disabilities.

During my recent visit, I had the privilege of accompanying the children to Kantafu, where they spent a wonderful day together. They participated in games, interacted with one another, and enjoyed nutritious meals in a safe and loving environment.

For many of these children, Kantafu has become a second home. Most of them come from extremely vulnerable families living in the underserved communities of Mathare, where access to regular, nutritious meals is a daily struggle. Every visit to Kantafu brings them joy, hope, and a sense of belonging. Seeing their smiles and excitement is a reminder of the life-changing impact that PBF’s generosity continues to make.

Beyond providing food, this support gives the children an opportunity to learn, socialize, play, and grow in an environment where they feel accepted and cared for. It has greatly improved their well-being and quality of life.

Challenges:

Despite the tremendous progress made through the feeding program, the school continues to face significant challenges:

Insufficient beds and mattresses:

During school holidays, many children are unable to remain at the center because there are not enough beds and mattresses to accommodate them.

Limited play space: The available space for recreation is inadequate for the number of children, limiting opportunities for physical activity and social interaction.

Providing additional beds and mattresses would enable more children to stay at Kantafu during school holidays, where they would be assured of nutritious meals, proper care, companionship, and a safe environment to learn and play. This support would make a profound difference in the lives of these vulnerable children.
