April 2026: Ethiopia/Lalibela: PBF’s Holiday Flour and Oil Support for the Destitute During Easter

Easter is a season of renewal, hope, and compassion. For many communities, it is also a time to extend generosity to those in need. PBF has consistently prioritized humanitarian outreach during major holidays. PBF has continued its longstanding tradition of providing flour and oil support to destitute families during the Easter holiday, ensuring that even the most vulnerable can celebrate with dignity.

Recognizing that food insecurity is one of the most pressing challenges faced by marginalized groups, the organization focuses on distributing essential staples such as flour and cooking oil. These items are not only culturally significant during Easter celebrations but also practical for sustaining households beyond the holiday.

Flour and oil gifts during Easter carry profound symbolic meaning: flour represents sustenance, purity, and the promise of abundance, while oil signifies healing, divine presence, and spiritual illumination. Together, they embody both physical nourishment and spiritual renewal.

What does “fine flour mixed with oil” symbolize in our spiritual lives?

Fine Flour Mixed with Oil in Scripture
“‘When anyone presents a grain offering to the LORD, his offering shall be fine flour; he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it.’” ( Leviticus 2:1)

Why Fine Flour?
Fine flour is wheat ground until every coarse piece is gone. It pictures a life without rough edges: pure, even, and consistent. Jesus embodied this perfection (Hebrews 4:15). Believers are called to the same refined character (James 1:4).

Why Oil?
Oil consistently signifies the Holy Spirit’s presence and power (1 Samuel 16:13; Zechariah 4:6). Oil heals, nourishes, and illuminates—roles the Spirit fulfills in us (John 14:16–17).

Why Mix Them?
The flour was not merely sprinkled with oil; it was thoroughly blended. This portrays the inseparable union of a yielded life with the Spirit’s influence (Romans 8:9). Our refinement is meaningless unless saturated by the Spirit’s anointing.

What It Means for Us Today

  • Consistent Christ-likeness: rough, sinful grains are ground away through obedience.
  • Spirit-filled living: every particle of our daily routine is touched by the Spirit, not reserved for “church moments.”
  • Acceptable worship: the mixture produced a “soothing aroma to the LORD” (Leviticus 2:2). Spirit-empowered purity still delights God (Romans 12:1).
  • Sustaining others: bread from fine flour fed Israel; Spirit-refined believers become nourishment to a hungry world (John 6:35; Philippians 2:15–16).

For the Lalibela destitute, the gift of flour and oil at Easter carries meanings that go far beyond material aid. Lalibela is not only a town but a sacred heart of Ethiopian Christianity, where Easter is celebrated with deep spiritual devotion. In this context, flour and oil resonate with both cultural and religious symbolism:

PBF’s Easter flour and oil support program exemplifies the spirit of compassion and solidarity. By addressing immediate needs while honoring cultural traditions, the initiative not only alleviates hunger but also strengthens community bonds. As Easter symbolizes renewal, PBF’s efforts renew hope for the destitute, reminding them that they are valued members of society.

Many destitute shared heartfelt appreciations. One mother explained that “without the flour and oil, her family would have been unable to celebrate Easter properly.” Another elderly beneficiary emphasized that the gesture was more than material—it was a reminder that they were not forgotten.
