January 2026: Uganda/Teso: Report on the Heifers Project and Its Transformational Impact on Children Living with Disabilities in Uganda.

Report on the Heifers Project and Its Transformational Impact on Children Living with Disabilities in Uganda.

  1. Introduction:

Children living with disabilities in rural communities of Teso subregion in Uganda face multiple layers of vulnerability. Beyond their physical or intellectual challenges, many are born into families struggling with extreme poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. These challenges often deny them proper nutrition, health education, and dignity.

The Heifers Project was designed as a sustainable and dignified intervention to address these challenges at household level. Rather than offering short-term relief, this project empowers families caring for children living with disabilities with a long-term source of nutrition and income.

  1. The Deeper Meaning of a Heifer:

A heifer or cow is more than an animal—it is hope, dignity, and opportunity.

For families caring for children with disabilities, a cow represents:

  • A daily source of nutrition
  • A steady income
  • A restoration of dignity and independence
  • A future filled with possibility

In communities where disability is often associated with dependency and stigma, the gift of a heifer sends a powerful message: these children and their families are capable, valued, and deserving of investment.

  1. Improved Nutrition for Children Living with Disabilities:

Good nutrition is critical for children with disabilities, especially those with:

  • Weak immunity
  • Delayed growth
  • Mobility challenges
  • Ongoing medical needs

Through milk consumption:

  • Children gain essential proteins, calcium, and vitamins
  • Their immune systems improve
  • Frequent illness and malnutrition reduce.
  • Overall health and strength increase

Many families we previously supported relied on emergency medical assistance due to malnutrition-related complications and Poverty. Families that received heifers in 2024 with support from PBF are now able to meet basic nutritional needs consistently.

  1. Economic Empowerment of Caregivers:

Most caregivers—often mothers or grandparents—cannot engage in full-time work due to the demands of caring for a child with a disability. The heifer project directly addresses this reality.

With a cow: Families earn income from selling milk

Income helps pay for:

  •  Medical care
  •  School needs
  • Transport to health facilities
  • Basic household necessities
  • Families reduce dependency on emergency aid

This income restores confidence and self-reliance, allowing caregivers to provide better care with dignity.

  1. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty:

Disability and poverty often reinforce each other. When a household lacks income, children with disabilities suffer the most. The heifers project interrupts this cycle by creating sustainable household resilience.

Evidence from previously supported families shows:

  • Reduced calls for emergency medical assistance
  • Improved household stability
  • Better care and attention given to children with disabilities
  • Increased community acceptance and inclusion

This proves the project is not only compassionate but effective and sustainable.

  1. Long-Term Impact and Sustainability:

Heifers multiply. Calves can be passed on to other vulnerable families, creating a ripple effect of impact within the community.

This approach:

  • Extends donor impact beyond one household
  • Builds community solidarity
  • Creates long-term transformation rather than temporary relief
  1. Conclusion:

The gift of a heifer is a gift of life, dignity, and future.

For children living with disabilities, it means:

  • Better health through proper nutrition
  • Improved quality of life
  • Greater chance to survive and thrive

For their families, it means:

  • A reliable source of income
  • Reduced poverty
  • Renewed hope and dignity

We remain deeply grateful to our donors PBF for believing in solutions that empower rather than create dependency. Your support is not only changing lives—it is restoring hope and building sustainable futures for children living with disabilities in Uganda
