PBF Christmas Holiday Support for Destitute
Over the past 20 years, PBF’s monthly and major holiday assistance has supported over 300 impoverished families. Food insecurity remains a critical issue for destitute, and PBF’s efforts have helped alleviate some of the hardships faced by those in need. The Christmas wheat flour support program aims to provide food for destitute families during the holiday season, bringing hope and sustenance to those struggling to make ends meet.
For people of Lalibela, “Gena,” which is named after Ethiopian Christmas, holds great significance. The date was also the birthday of St. Lalibela in addition to Jesus Christ. The custom of giving and receiving presents at Christmas is to remind us of the presents given to Jesus by the Wise Men: frankincense, gold, and myrrh. It is believed that Ethiopian King Bazen (Balthazar) was among those who deliver these gifts to Jesus Christ. The act of giving during the holiday season is seen as a way to honor this tradition and show gratitude for the blessings received throughout the year. This practice of generosity and compassion is deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture and continues to be an important part of celebrating Christmas in Lalibela.
For the destitute, a wheat flour support is beyond the wise man’s gifts. It is a time when the community comes together to share what they have with those in need, embodying the spirit of giving and kindness. This tradition of giving back reflects the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of helping others during this special time of year.
This Christmas, the PBF Lalibela team organized this timely support to deliver before Ethiopian Christmas. This helps them to pass the coming Gena with joy and a sense of hope, knowing that they are not alone in their struggles.

The people expressed their gratitude to PBF for their usual holiday assistance.
