AFYAMTAANI MICRO-CREDIT PROGRAMME;
Narrative & Financial Report
Executive Summary:
This report presents the AfyaMtaani-PBF micro-credit programme for the period May to July 2025. It outlines progress achieved, beneficiaries reached, income generated, challenges encountered, and a funding request to enable programme expansion.
AfyaMtaani continues to focus on underserved communities in Nairobi, particularly women, youth, and small traders in Mathare and Huruma.
During this reporting period, AfyaMtaani disbursed a total of USD 6,000 in micro-credit funds provided by PBF. Of this amount:
- USD 5,100 (85%) was disbursed directly as loans to micro-entrepreneurs.
- USD 900 (15%) was allocated to administrative and operational expenses, including staff salary, training, transport, and bank charges.
A total of 45 micro-entrepreneurs accessed loans during this period, creating employment opportunities for an estimated 135 individuals. These loans enabled beneficiaries to strengthen and expand their businesses, improve household income, and enhance family resilience. The programme continues to demonstrate that small, well-targeted loans can have a transformative impact on community livelihoods.
Rationale for Small Loans:
AfyaMtaani’s small-loan model ensures that funds are distributed widely across many families, maximizing impact. Small loans reduce repayment risk and encourage entrepreneurial innovation. For poor households, AfyaMtaani’s micro-loans serve as a lifeline compared to commercial credit, which often carries prohibitive interest rates that cripple small businesses. By keeping loans accessible and affordable, AfyaMtaani fosters sustainable poverty alleviation in vulnerable communities.
Income from Loan Interest:
Loan disbursements generated modest interest income, which was used to cover essential administrative costs:
- Salary of the micro-credit officer
- Transport for client follow-ups
- Training sessions for micro-entrepreneurs
- Bank charges
This model strengthens programme sustainability while reducing dependency on external funds for operational costs.
Programme Challenges:
- High demand for credit: Available funds were insufficient to serve all awaiting clients.
- Rising cost of living and inflation: Micro-entrepreneurs face increasing pressure, leading to requests for larger loans.
- Commodity and input prices: Some clients seek bigger loan amounts to cope with rising costs.
Funding Request to PBF:
AfyaMtaani respectfully requests an additional allocation of USD 6,000 from PBF to meet the growing demand for micro-credit in the upcoming quarter. This funding will enable the programme to reach more vulnerable families in Mathare and Huruma, providing them with capital to grow small businesses, create jobs, and strengthen household resilience.
We deeply value the collaboration between AfyaMtaani and PBF and remain committed to strict accountability and transparency in managing these funds. Your continued support is transforming lives and communities in Nairobi’s most underserved areas.
