Emergency Situation Report: Floods in Teso Subregion, Uganda.
In Soroti and the Teso subregion of eastern Uganda has been struck by severe and continuous flooding following heavy rains. The floods have caused widespread destruction across multiple villages, washing away homes, crops, and livestock, and leaving hundreds of families without shelter or basic necessities.
Impact on Communities
The flooding has directly impacted over 130 families thus far. Many homes have been completely submerged, forcing families—including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities—to seek refuge in open areas and temporary shelters.
Tragically, there have been over 30 confirmed deaths of children, and the floods have buried six people with disabilities. The death toll may rise as local volunteers continue to dig through collapsed homes in search of missing persons.
There has been no government intervention so far. Community members and local volunteers are leading the rescue efforts with very limited resources.
Urgent Needs:
The affected families are now in desperate need of emergency support.
Immediate priorities include:
- Tents and temporary shelters for displaced families
- Food and clean water
- Bedding materials: blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets
- Clothing and warm jackets
- Basic household items: jerrycans, basins, soap, and utensils
Children, especially those living with disabilities, are facing extreme hardship—sleeping in the cold, hungry, and exposed to disease. Without urgent intervention, the risk of illness and further loss of life remains very high.
