Janaki Ranmuthugala, Shaping Clay, Inspiring Lives

In the serene village of Dankotuwa, Sri Lanka, clay takes on new life in the hands of Janaki Ranmuthugala—a professionally trained artist whose terracotta creations speak not only of beauty, but of resilience, heritage, and community empowerment.

Janaki’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in education and lifelong dedication to her craft. Growing up in a home enriched by art—her father being a respected artist and school principal—Janaki was encouraged to explore creativity from a young age. She pursued her passion through higher studies and hands-on practice, developing into a skilled ceramic and terracotta sculptor whose work is both technically refined and emotionally expressive.

Today, Janaki’s workshop serves as more than a space for artistic expression—it is a vibrant community hub. Her work engages a network of villagers, especially women, who support her at every stage of the production process. From clay preparation and firing to finishing and transporting goods, these collaborators rely on Janaki’s leadership and vision for their own livelihoods.

When Janaki encountered setbacks due to aging tools, weather damage, and economic pressures, the Peter Bachmann Foundation (PBF) recognized the importance of sustaining her work. PBF offered timely support to repair her working place for a smoother production, and continued employment for those who depend on her.

Her art has since reached esteemed venues like Barefoot Gallery in Colombo, where her terracotta pieces are displayed and admired for their authenticity and craftsmanship. Behind every piece lies not only Janaki’s talent but the hard work of a whole village working alongside her.

Janaki often shares her gratitude in heartfelt messages: “It is your help and God’s grace that keep me going. You understood my struggle when others didn’t.”

Her story is one of strength, grace, and giving back. Through her art, she is preserving a cultural legacy, uplifting a rural economy, and serving as a role model to others—especially aspiring women artists.

The Peter Bachmann Foundation continues to stand by individuals like Janaki—those who use their gifts to uplift others.

Empower a craft. Support a dream. Build a future.
