June 2025: Ethiopia / Addis Ababa: Peter Bachmann Visits the PBF Center for Elderly Care

Peter Bachmann Visits the PBF Center for Elderly Care in Addis Ababa (VDI)

VDI is a small association in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, dedicated with great commitment to supporting homeless elderly people. The center provides a warm meal each day for 70 to 90 people, as well as beds for some and medical assistance. All visitors are especially vulnerable due to age, illness, and poverty. Additionally, beds are available where the homeless can find safe shelter and basic healthcare.

The PBF Foundation covers all ongoing operational costs every month. Over time, the center has become a meaningful place for both PBF and international visitors. Terfa Dinka stands out as an inspiring example of lived Christian faith.

In May 2025, Peter visited the center. He handed out heart-shaped chocolates to everyone, each inscribed with the word “Insieme”, an Italian term meaning “We are one and belong together.” The chocolate was specially donated for VDI by Elisabeth Weber. Just a few days later—by then we were already in Kenya—we received the sad news from Switzerland that Elisabeth had passed away one day before the planned handover of this special gift. Her departure moves us deeply to this day. Her gesture—donating chocolate as a symbol of unity—left a lasting impression at VDI and continues to touch our hearts profoundly.

Mohamed Mushaga, a young man with a disability who lives at the center and serves as coordinator of the PBF student support project, also received the chocolate—and held it with his prosthesis.
