June 2025: Kenya/ PBF opens a center for differently disabled children in Kantafu Kenya

This is Center for Children Living with various kinds and levels of Disability. It is in the Center of Mathare in Nairobi. Many children are born with all sorts of disability in these areas especially because of the kind of life people face. Unfortunately, there are no public or government institutions in this place to accommodate these children.

Several years ago, the Benedictine Fathers of Nairobi established a Center where children living with disability were registered, cared for, screened and sent to the respective institutions based on their kind of disability. The center is currently struggling because the funds from the Benedictines ran out and even the space has been turned into a Church and Private School Complex. The small place that the Center currently occupies is not enough for these children who need a spacious and a safe place to spend their day.

A group of Well-wishers including the Children Care Givers and past volunteers have since collected funds send built a more spacious and Disability friendly Center in Kantafu in the outskirts of Nairobi. In this Center, the children can stay and learn Life Skills that would help them to live on their own. The Center is built and ready to accommodate the Children but there have been no funds to maintain the center’s daily running costs of feeding and staffing.

During Dear Peter’s visit to Kenya, we visited this Center and he saw the need for support to these children. PBF immediately sent the money for the preparation to move the first batch of Children to this Center. We appreciate this gesture very much. Everything is now ready and on June 13th, the Day of the African Child we celebrated at Center. On July 1st we are going to officially admit the first cohort of the children at our Kantafu Center. They will be trained on various skills for a specific period after which they will be re-integrated back to their families and communities.
