December 2024: Ethiopia / Lalibela: PBF Memorial Clinic construction is fully completed

PBF Memorial Clinic construction is fully completed

This week means the last week of PBF Memorial Clinic construction. The clinic will soon be ready to provide much-needed medical services to the community in Lalibela. The construction process has been successful and on schedule. We want to share some highlight points about the construction processes that have taken place.

Efficiency: We have planned to construct a single medium clinic. Now that we have completed construction, we have constructed an additional 4-room service center. We built this second build using only leftover building materials from the original building. We have completed the scope of PBF, the earlier timetable, and within the budget. We have taken 14 months to complete this massive clinic project. And since we started from land and paperwork, the process of the project takes exactly 2 years. We completed the construction 8 months earlier than the time set in the proposal document timetable. We completed all tasks as planned, on schedule and ahead of schedule!

Effectiveness: We have met above the starting project planned requirements and are preparing for playing its role for the huge catchment area population. Now on the day the construction is completed, we have 29 health service rooms, 2 standard disabled toilets (male & female), 2 staff toilets, 2 client toilets, and 2 staff shower rooms. All of our service buildings are designed to be convenient for the disabled. We were planning to establish a medium clinic, but now we are fulfilling the national standard for health centers. In Ethiopia, health centers are next to primary hospital level. We will upgrade to be the primary hospital in a few years; the remaining national standards are limited.

The most interesting issue from our construction periodAlthough we made our own construction disaster prevention and control arrangements readiness (first aid medical setups), we did not experience any personal or single input damage during the construction process. This assures us that the prayer support of PBF benefactresses, your daily praying for us, PBF affiliates, is valuable along with the financial support. Thanks to God!

  • We have built a quality and standard facility for the sustainable community benefit and human life in the area.
  • We have never faced a financial problem during this project going.

Service Delivery Plan
We had conducted a series of surveys of basic community health problems, gaps in service delivery, and the way forward in the catchment area. The community we are trying to serve has more than 5 districts and 2 city administration people, which are about 700,000 people. Our initial concept was to identify cases and health problems that the people would require medical care for, traveling 300 km and above distances and facing high costs. In this catchment area, the economic status is very low, and access to health services has limitations.

We make our health scope on the following main scope:

  1. Serve by daily-based health education on disease prevention.
  2. Make available up-to-date medical equipment; make early detections and treatment of disease.
  3. Every health service will be updated periodically with structure based on research and generates health system evidence.
  4. Providing charitable surgical procedure services by inviting and involving domestic and international doctors and medical experts.
  5. Make all services connected and using health system software. This will be the new system for the North Wollo Zone.
  6. Reducing the referrals and providing service community seek nearby.

The furniture arrived at the clinic for all rooms. In the coming 15 days, medical equipment and overall framework and human resources are fully ready for inauguration. The strong and selfless team commitment ensures the success and sustainability of this innovative health system.

Thank you to PBF donors, the PBF board, our honoree, and everyone who stands with PBF to accomplish this project.

On January 7, 2025, we would like to invite everyone to the PBF Memorial Clinic’s inauguration.
