PBF Health Services in the Slums of Nairobi
The AfyaMtaani Team hereby presents a report on the relocation of our Clinic to a new location and the continuation of our Outreach Program in Mathare and Huruma Slums in Nairobi.
Relocation
Due to the rising rates of insecurity in Huruma and Mathare, AfyaMtaani has been compelled to make the difficult decision to relocate its primary operations. While this decision was not easy, the safety of our team and the people we serve remains a priority. In the past few months we have encountered life threatening robberies theft and threats from criminals targeting our staff and patients. We have lost some of our medical equipment, a laptop and 2 mobile fones. We shared these incidences with Dan, Getachew and dear Peter after which he decided to relocate to a some how safer location.
We are profoundly grateful for the financial support provided by the PBF. The funds received have been instrumental in facilitating the smooth relocation of our operations. The assistance has enabled us to maintain our commitment to serving the community, despite the challenges posed by insecurity.
Continued Service to Huruma/Mathare Communities
Even though we have relocated, we have not abandoned our main target group, ‘the poor of the poor’ slum residents who fully depend on our services through outreach, clinic visits and our community pharmacy. Our doors are always open for them.
Every month, we conduct community outreach programs to address their health needs.
Our services include:
- Health checkups
- Specialized consultants and treatment
- Distribution of medical supplies
- Health education
- Follow-up on ongoing cases
- Pharmacy
Outreach
Our outreach strategy allows us to continue providing essential health services, fostering trust, and ensuring that our patients’ health is cared for, especially those with chronic illnesses. Our commitment to following up on patients ensures that their health needs are consistently met, despite our physical relocation.
Sustainability perspective
The relocation is a temporary solution to ensure safety, but our connection and responsibility to the people of Huruma and Mathare remain unwavering. In our new location, we are currently advertising our services to households in the new neighborhood who are increasingly seeking our services at a fee because of the equipment and the professional experience of our staff. We intend to upscale our services and our facilities because the new paying clients will help us maintain our facilities and pharmacy stock. This will help us achieve our sustainability goals. We shall be able to pay our visiting specialist doctors and our staff. We may soon need to buy a few additional medical equipment to be able to maintain our high approval rating among the new patients.
We again thank PBF for their invaluable support over the years since the Covid 19 pandemic when we started small but maintained consistency and reliability in service to those who need our services most.
