VDI Elderly Care and Support Narrative and expenditure Report for the budget year 2017, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Poverty, Old age different types of diseases relate to old age such as mental and psychological problems and especially lack of balanced nutrition food has seriously complicated the situation of ostracized elderly people in Ethiopia.Spcially those who are homeless, hungry, sick and lonely men and women are the most suffering part of the population.

With the financial support we have received from PBF we have served 438 direct beneficiaries and 62 indirect beneficiaries such as grandchildren who have lost their families because of HIV Aids and bed ridden men and women. The service we have given is conducted as follows,

  1. Daily Meal provision
    At our main day care center we have provided balanced food every day for 100 (one hundred) older men and women, including tea and coffee with compassion and human dignity.
  1. Provision of Monthly Cash transfer money
    We have served 139 older at Durame, 80 older people at Dembi Dollo, 50 older people at Nekente, 50 older people at Burayu and 23 older people at Asko St Francis Parish. Totally 343 very destitute older men and women have received cash transfer money every month. With money they have met their daily basic needs.
  1. Community Shelter provision
    We have served 30 homeless older men and women at our main center by providing them three times food, and all necessary sleeping facilities, with medical care and provide dignified funeral for one departed older man. They were provided enough water for laundry and bathing every day at the center for their personal hygiene.
  1. Provision of clothes
    We have provided them a lot of clothes to 200 older men and women clothes by collecting these clothes from different families and individuals.
  1. Provision of Health Care
    We have given first aid services at our day care center by giving them medication for headache,stomacache,diahrroea,toothache, pain, common cold and gastric. When it is serious illness we bring them to St. Theresa of Calcutta’s medical center for further treatment.
  2. Handcrfts work for older women
    We have 10 (ten) older women who are appointed on cotton work, we have purchased cotton. This cotton work helps them for their physical exercise and therapy. they spin this cotton and prepare the cotton for weaving process to bring it into local blanket production. Their becoming coming together for stressful older women helps them to minimize their frustration and share new conditions. They have coffee ceremony during working break time.

Summary:

  • We have distributed sanitary materials like soap and others health care materials to improve their personal hygiene status.
  • We have purchased coffee, tea and sugar that has been utilized at the center everyday .
  • We have made payment for three cooks and one guard who are serving the elderly people every day at the center.
  • We have also purchased fuel for bring food items from markets and also used transportation to bring sick older people to St. Teresa medical center for further treatment.
  • All our targeted beneficiaries are happy for the care and support given to them.
  • Especially with the provision of daily food, shelter medication, cash transfer money, and with all the services they are given they are highly grateful to your Organization.
  • They have developed confidence, hope and good physical and psychological makeup and free of any level of frustrations.
  • Most of them have stopped begging on the street corners.
  • What is threatening us is the devaluation of our currency, because whatever type of food items and materials have become extremely expensive.
